It is with sadness that Ron Lang one of the founders of the ‘Mayville Community Centre’ (1974), passed away early this morning.
For those of you who didn’t know Ron and there can’t be many, who are long standing residents within the Mildmay ward, specifically the Mayville estate.
Ron was one of the local residents of the Mayville estate who fought for the centre to remain open for the local community in the 1970’s.
The then named, ‘Mayville Community Centre’ was run by Ron and other local residents for a number of years and although the Mildmay Community Partnership was formed in 2004 to help run the centre. Ron has over the years remained a constant and steadfast supporter of the now named Mildmay Community Centre.
Ron although not wanting to become a member of the Mildmay Community Partnership board, was in his own right, a ‘Chair’ of the Over 50’s, the bingo! and the Golden Oldies Senior Citizens.
Ron also loved his garden and you will have noted how beautiful he kept his garden space in front of his home. And as the community garden at the centre has begun to develop into a beautiful greenspace, Ron recently joined us in providing his gardening expertise, in supporting the development of the community garden for and on behalf of the local residents.
In taking on the role as Centre Manager in 2008 I had the pleasure in meeting some of the residents who fought side by side with Ron, to keep the centre open. In my chatting with them over the years they were with us, the one thing that stood out in meeting them; was their love for their local community centre and their pride in fighting to keep the centre open for and on behalf of their local community, namely the Mayville residents.
My memories of their commitment, love for their local community and indeed over the years, a steadfast belief in the Mildmay Community Centre (formally Mayville), have remained with me to this day, in my endeavour to keep the torch burning.
Along with many of Ron’s family and friends, I should like to thank Ron for showing us all how to fight for what you believe in, love for your local community, the importance of a safe place where your community can come together and how to give without limitations.
In loving Memory of Ron Lang (1931 – 2019)
